Anthropic's Impeccable Timing

Anthropic's IPO arrives as they crest the AI wave

This week Anthropic finally dropped their S1. The big takeaway is that most of the rumors to this point have been confirmed. They have delivered perhaps the strongest revenue ramp of any company in history. Revenue has been climbing 10x or more per year since founding. Net revenue retention clocked in at 900% for which there are no real comparisons. The business is very efficient pulling down $6m per employee, greater than most public corps.

In my earlier post on Anthropic’s revenue, I mentioned one risk that I still believe is looming.

Models like Claude will not be able to maintain pricing power as models commoditize

Even after seeing the massive results from the S1, I still believe this factor should make investors hesitate. Anthropic’s S1 shows great margins. There’s a lot of room for prices to fall if competition intensifies. Their own flagship Opus model has been cut in price by 20% since earlier versions. Opus 5.5 is listed at $20 / mil output and Opus 5 is priced at $25. Haiku dropped by an even larger percentage.

Their main competitor is OpenAI who has been agressively lowering prices since the summer. When I wrote that post, Terra’s price reduced from $15 to $12. Today, the most recent Terra is priced at $5 / mil output tokens. That’s another 58% reduction.

Claude has the momentum in Enterprise. It has been working it’s way into new AI workflows. But will that head start translate into a real enduring moat? Can they maintain their position as the leader in intelligence? It’s a great time to IPO before these questions get answered.
